What a nice change in my reading schedule!

This is an informative book for school-aged children about Green Sea Turtles. Monika is well qualified to teach us—not only is she an avid conservationist, she is also a qualified marine scientist. She has prepared a well-laid out book which I’m sure is guaranteed to capture the attention of any child (or adult) who likes the sea and sea creatures, or who may perhaps be starting to become aware of endangered species of marine life.

Each page is graced with beautiful colour photographs (this book is best viewed on a colour ereader) of these fascinating creatures, accompanied by brief explanations, which are clear and intelligible—neither too elementary nor too complex—something any youngster will comprehend.

In this book, we learn what sea turtles eat, how long they live, how they mate, about the threats to their existence, where you can see them, and simple ways in which everyone can help to preserve and protect them. There is a very handy list at the end of 'turtle lingo'—a useful little compendium of terms used to describe aspects of turtles and their lives.

I knew very little about the subject—most of my limited knowledge has come from watching David Attenborough’s TV programmes, but now I know a little more from this concise but enlightening little reference book.

We are all becoming increasingly aware of the dwindling numbers of creatures in the animal and sea world, and books like this are a wonderful way of not only teaching us about them, but reminding us of the importance of the endeavour to protect them.

This is my second dip into the ocean with Monika. And it was just as invigorating and refreshing as the first!

Monika has written these short books for children, but this adult enjoyed it very much. Short, concise, and intelligible, in just 45 pages I learnt, amongst other things, how many species of fish there are, how one measures the speed of a fish, that parrotfish can make sand (you’ll love that one) and that male sea horses give birth. These fascinating facts are explained clearly and are accompanied by beautiful, stunning photographs, along with a diagram of a fish’s anatomy and a glossary of fishy terms.

Less fun, but very importantly, there are hints and tips of what we can do, as responsible human beings, to help prevent extinction of some of our marine wonders.

This book teaches youngsters about the beauties at the bottom of the sea and educates them about the importance of its preservation—knowledge that hopefully they can pass on to their own children.

Monika has created a perfect, informative, instructive, and enlightening way to learn.

I needed no encouragement to read a third marine book by Monika Mira (see also Fun Fish Facts for Kids and Hawaii's Green Sea Turtles): this time, along with some spectacular photography, she tells us all about coral reefs. Along with the fascinating facts, she stresses the urgency of its preservation and how we can, with just a little thought, all help with this goal.

Monika’s books are aimed at teaching middle-school children about what goes on at the bottom of the sea. And she does it well. As with all her books, Coral Reefs is concise, but clear, and very informative. I certainly learnt a lot. So, I now know what a coral reef is, how it feeds, who lives on it (illustrated by stunning photos of the beautifully coloured fish and patterned molluscs), and its importance. Monika lays out the threats to the existence of coral reefs and then the simple environmental measures we can take to protect them.

It’s always a pleasure to read and learn with Monika. Her books have a valuable place on the bookshelf.
