Günter Metken (1928–2000)

Günter Metken’s 1970 volume, Comics, traces the development of sequential art storytelling from early examples such as the Bayeux Tapestry, woodcuts, political cartoons, and more through the twentieth-century artform most readers identify as “comics.” His examples include classics such as Little Nemo and Pogo through superheroes like Tarzan and Superman. He also touches on the then-recent Marvel Age of Comics, with examples from The Fantastic Four, The Amazing Spider-Man, Thor, and Iron Man. While Metken largely draws upon American and English-language works, he also includes German and French comics as well as European erotic comics. Finally, Metken concludes with an examination of comics as art, including Picasso’s sequential drawings and the work of Roy Lichtenstein. This volume will primarily interest comics scholars for its international perspective during the Silver Age of comics and for the comparisons of U.S. works with European comic books and comic strips.… (plus d'informations)
