Carl McKever

Poetic Expressions by Carl McKever is the first of his series of poetry books. McKever used poetry, as he explains, as a release from anger and pain and to fill a hole in his life. His poetry although good in following following rhyme and near rhyme patterns is not my prefered theme of poetry. However, for a Christian reader, that may be totally different and I expect it is as he has published five additional volumes of poetry. Poetry speaks to the reader and expresses thoughts and feelings that are shared or imagery of things, feelings, and emotions mere people cannot not put into words. McKever does this for his intended audience. Although I can share the experiences of grief and loss, we took different paths out. Personally, the writing just does not speak to me and the fault is mine for being outside the target audience. I am a bit torn in this review. If it were nonfiction I would not have this problem as histories and and science do not carry a personal connection. Poetry does and that connection is what makes poetry work. Personal feelings aside I will base my review on the technical aspects of the book. I would wish the young poet all the luck, but he has that already and has published seven more books than me. If you like Christian themed poetry, give McKever's poetry collections a read; I am sure you will enjoy them.
