INTRODUCTION

Adjudicated events, contests, or festivals have long been associated with music and
are firmly entrenched in music education programs throughout the United States. The
positive and negative aspects of local, regional, and state wide music contests are
continually discussed throughout our profession and although the system is not perfect, it
seems that adjudicated events will be around for quite some time. If used properly
adjudicated events can be a unique source of motivation for young musicians. Band
directors must weigh the pros and cons of adjudicated events to decide what emphasis these
activities will have in the development of the school's music program. Many new band
directors are unsure of the role adjudicated events should play in their music programs.
The new band director who decides to participate must become acquainted with many
administrative rules and procedures in addition to the actual preparation of the performing
ensemble. The question in most new teachers' minds is should a group go to contest and
what positive educational experiences will take place. Included in this paper will be
positive and helpful suggestions for new band directors taking their students to adjudicated
events. This paper will also outline the procedural guidelines relevant to all band directors
