A thought-provoking book that for once encourages you not to think about how to market your business online, but how to (putting it crudely) market yourself. Mayfield runs through the functions of key social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, which may be unnecessary for those of us who've grown up with the internet at our fingertips, but could well help older readers. And it's helpful (and a little alarming) to be reminded of how much information about each of us is out there, and how conscious we have to be of our online reputation (the 'web shadow' of the title).

Yet the novelty of the book lies in its approach rather than its content. Don't expect to learn many paradigm-changing tips and tricks, but Mayfield's emphasis on personal social media is a welcome change from the bullish business focus of many similar books. And it did make me think of ways to streamline my own web presence: for example, I've now bought my own domain name and am using it as an index for my presences on other sites.
