This was an okay book. It's probably more like 3.5 stars, but that's not an option. My problem with it is that I didn't really connect with the characters. The story was fine, but I didn't care very much if the characters survived. Doubt I'll continue on with the series.

This is the first book I read by James Maxwell, and was frustrated with the telling of the story. I put the book aside and came back a few days later, and felt it was interesting enough to continue reading. Still, the story had problems. The Evermen are referenced, but I do not know who they are. It's like I'm following the characters without a sense of the big picture. I read 62% of this book and do not intend to continue the series. I also asked my husband for his opinion and he didn't get past the first chapter before he was too frustrated to continue. That said, I read Maxwell's "A Girl From Nowhere" (Firewall trilogy), enjoyed that story, and intend to continue that series.

cliched plot, shallow characters who could fill roles because they were the main characters, not for any other apparent reason, fairly predictable from the very start really. Made it to 2 stars because the magic system was decent, best part of the story really.

I was surprised to see so many low-star reviews on here, complaining about amateurish writing and copying Rothfuss, among other things. I don't agree. I've read a lot of fantasy books, The Name of the Wind among them, and this book isn't a poor copy. I like the characters, too, even if Miro is some sort of super hero. He still has his weaknesses, as does his sister Ella. I can't wait to read the sequel.
