Jilted in January by Cara Maxwell
The Rake Review #1

Up past midnight wanting to find out if Edward and Persephone would get their happily ever after the second time around. Great way to spend the first day of 2024!

What I liked:
* Persephone: duke’s daughter, back in London after seven years away, jilted by Edward ten years before the story begins, still loves but doesn’t trust him, The Fixer, wants a husband and family
* Edward: wealthy, shipping magnate, mother Chinese and father British, has a younger brother, rake, jilted Persephone ten years ago, still loves and can’t forget her, conflicted
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* Madison: Persephone’s friend and chaperone, in a loving marriage, wise, accepting, wants what is best for her friend
* The search for Edward’s kidnapped brother and how it all panned out
* Eugenia: Edward’s mother, Chinese, loving wife and mother, gave good advice to Edward
* Thinking about the ton and the social levels in British society and how difficult it must have been for some, especially other and mixed races
* That the was a happily ever after…eventually

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how vicious and cruel some society types were and still can be

REVIEW

From a Scoundrel with Love

Great way to read favorite authors and find new writers that you will want to read again. This anthology of stories containing 1000 pages has only one author that I know well so reading all of the others will add to my author list, I am sure.

THE PIRATE’S DUCHESS by Katherine Bone, first in the book, has a villain to be thwarted and a husband and wife reunited, a happy ending and a hint of a romance that might take place in an upcoming book by Ms. Bone.

THE BRUNETTE WHO STOLE HIS HEART by Tabetha Waite, was the second book I read. A lady’s maid and valet are talked into standing in for their employers. A lovely story and a new author that I will read again.

CHASING THE DUKE by Tracy Sumner, is the story I had to read first as she is one of my favorite writers. This story is about a woman who has promised herself that she will NOT chase her brother’s best friend, the person she had a childhood crush on for so many years, but what happens if he chases her? I knew I would enjoy this story and was so glad that I did.

I look forward to reading and getting to know the other six authors soon.

Thank you to BookSirens and the authors for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Start this lovely NC17 post-Regency romance, involving a disappearance and the horse-racing circuit in England, early in the day unless you you are up for an all-nighter.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

The Brazen Belles Anthology

What a delightful way to read favorite authors and meet new ones!

I had to read the book because I love Tracy Sumner’s stories and hers was perfection. This story stars a watchmaker who makes clocks that keep perfect time and a housemaid that believes he is too far elevated for them to have a future together. Though he has loved her since he first saw her years before…they only meet and get to know one another in Sumner’s story.

I went on to read and enjoy each and every story in the book with a courtesan’s daughter making an outstanding match, a youngest son never loved gambling on a dance but perhaps eventually winning much more, a book fairy a bit like the elves and the shoemaker as a way to woo a woman, misguided words that put a wedge between two people that might be able to overcome them to find happiness together, horrible parents, wickedness to overcome, children born on the wrong side of the blanket, murder, and more are sprinkled through this book and though I have a few more stories to read…do believe I will return to some of the stories again in the future…after finishing the every one of them the first time through.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Are there new authors I have found that I would read again? Yes
