Courte biographie
Bernd Martin was born in Berlin, Germany, and grew up in Elsterwerda. He graduated from the Andreanum Humanist High School in Hildesheim, and after completing his military service, studied Eastern European history, English studies, and politics at the University of Marburg, the University of Durham in the UK, and the Free University of Berlin. He earned a doctorate at Marburg in 1967. Working as an assistant at the history seminar of the University of Freiburg with Andreas Hillgruber from 1968 to 1974, he completed his habilitation in 1973. He was appointed lecturer in 1974, and rose to become full professor in 1979. In 1980/1981, 1990/1991, and 1999 to 2001, Prof. Martin was the managing director of the history seminar at Freiburg and a visiting professor at various universities in Europe and Asia. Among his published works are his doctoral dissertation, Germany and Japan in World War II: From the Attack on Pearl Harbor to the German Surrender (1969); Peace Initiatives and Power Politics in the Second World War, 1939–1942 (1974); and Martin Heidegger and the "Third Reich": A Compendium (1989). Prof. Martin has also edited and co-edited numerous other works, including The Second World War and Its Consequences: Events - Effects - Reflections (2006),
