Before the publication of this book, Roy Mackal was a respected researcher working in the biological science division at the University of Chicago. He had several notable achievements to his credit: being the first to successfully isolate “infectious double-stranded bacteriophage DNA” for instance. After being asked to lend some scientific respectability to a monster hunt in Loch Ness in 1965, however, Mackal went a bit “off the deep end”…he spent years searching for Nessie, inventing ever more elaborate tracking equipment, investing ever more time and resources in the ultimately fruitless quest. Finally his finances failed and the search ended. In spite of a complete lack of evidence, he became firmly convinced that Nessie not only existed, but was in fact a previously unknown type of prehistoric animal, perhaps related to plesiosaurs, that had survived in the loch for millions of years.
