Moderately interesting, but terribly self-indulgent. This would have been an incredible magazine article, but a book is simply too long a format. There's such unnecessary detail and repetition here. And ultimately, what I enjoyed most was all the smaller pieces about the history of perfume, and not the author's search for her perfect scent.
Finally finished this book and still am not sure whether I liked it or not. Parts of it were very interesting, other parts just droned on as if trying to find as many ways as possible to say exactly the same thing. That became annoying and the book would get set aside for a while. The idea of it though, traveling the world for perfect ingredients still makes my heart skip a beat!
Library Thing thinks I won't like this book. I disagree. I don't think LT realizes how much I enjoy travelogues, especially when it is gray and rainy outside in my part of the world. Who wouldn't want a virtual vacation to sunnier, smellier climes?
The premise of this book, a bespoke perfume, is basically a delightful excuse for the author to go nosing around exotic locales. Lyttelton's mother was an archaeologist, so it is not surprising that the author shares with us the history of perfumers and perfume's cultural impact as well.
