This tidy little history presents a general overview of the history of Sacramento. I have to say that the first few chapters were the most interesting, covering John Augustus Sutter and his initial establishment of the city, the discovery of gold and its consequences, and the building of the railroad. The book goes on to cover the subsequent periods of "Growth and Reform," "Prohibition," "The Depression," "War," and "The Second Century" (post-WWII up to the 1980s covered very briefly). The text is supplemented by a good number of illustrations, an index, and "Suggested Reading."
