Zofia Kubar was born to a Jewish family in Łódź, Poland. Her parents were Izaak and Rachela Rubinsztejn. She graduated from Jagellonian University in Krakow. She escaped from the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II and survived by posing as a non-Jew on the other side of the city. In 1946, she married Wiktor Kubar. She became editor-in-chief of Nasza Ksiegarnia, a Polish publishing house for children's books. After emigrating to the USA in 1971, she graduated from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York. She wrote many books for children in Poland and Double Identity: A Memoir (1989) about her experiences in the Holocaust.
