I teach Authentic Communication for Leadership for a variety of non-profit service agencies and I have put this title on the list of recommended reads. In particular, pointing out the Response Styles exercise for participants to use.

What I really like is the use of real language, appropriate real world examples, and simple, yet potent, exercises that bring the point home. It is straight forward and very easy to understand. I found myself nodding my head a lot while reading it. I even rolled my eyes a few times when I recognized myself in the examples.

The authors recognize that you cannot change others but only yourself. Working with your own self awareness and integrating genuine communication into your interactions with others is the key to creating lasting results.

Of all the books and techniques I have studied, this book is the closest to what I would have written myself, as well as the best I have ever seen that truly distills the essence of genuine communication into the simplest of terms. Past participants have commented that they actually understand and can use this book in the workplace as well as at home. The techniques described in this book do not take hours of study and preparation--they can be used immediately and the results are amazing and only requires increasing your own awareness. There is no jargon or secret formulas. Just logical steps that can be easily integrated into your daily life.
