Although this Dora book relies on its gimmick, as do all sound effect books of the same nature, the story is not that bad. It is told in first person, as Dora describes what a typical day in her life might offer. She begins with her best friend Boots and how she met him, then explains a day at school, introduces some of their other friends along with Swiper, mentions the magical adventures on which they embark, and ends with a return to her family where she and Boots share everything that happened that day. The narration feels like Dora is speaking, borrowing liberally from the dialogue in the television show, and has a familiar and inviting tone. The pictures look like they be photo captures from the cartoon itself, but they are bright, colorful, and big and inviting. My daughters really enjoy reading this book with me. I read the story, and they push the sound effect button every time the text prompts them to (actually, multiple other times, as well). It makes for a slightly different reading experience, and continues to teach my children that reading is fun.
