Lessons Learned: Loving Yourself as a Black Woman discusses many of the issues and concerns women in their twenties, thirties, forties, and fifties face in their personal and professional life from sexism, racism, hair, balancing family, relationships, and much more. The book highlights ten life lessons that are of top priority when it comes to a black woman’s emotions, personal perceptions, and life in general. The book is written to inspire women of all ages, and invite them to realize that real happiness begins from the inside out. Although written specifically with the black woman in mind, many of the concepts in the book would benefit any woman.
Review:
Lessons Learned is a book that any woman can appreciate not just "A Black Woman." I enjoyed reading this book and I see myself reading it again in the near future. It is one of those books that makes you wonder if you missed something the first time around so you go back and reread it. After you reread it you realize you didn't miss anything but a new outlook on the same situation. Kudos Ms. Johnson on a job well done.
My favorite:
My favorite lesson is Lesson 2, "Stop Trying to Control Others, and Start Controlling Your Life." I love this chapter because it discusses how sometimes we can get so consumed in the lives of others that we lose focus of maintaining ourselves. Prime example, I went to my sister's house to pick up my crack-corn (Garret's Popcorn, ha ha). I was so upset that my niece tattooed a bleeping Playboy bunny on her wrist. So I'm like "Hugh ain't paying her no bleeping advertising fees and she ain't got no bleeping stock in Playboy!" Of course, I was on the phone with my friend and business partner so she heard my frantic rants. So after I left I continued to talk about it because I was really hot. Don't get me wrong, I have some tats but they all can be covered and no, I don't have to wear turtlenecks in the summer. So after a minute, my friend told me in so many words that the only thing I could do was voice my opinion just like I did. She told me I couldn't control what my niece chose to do and we need to get back to business at hand. Long story short, I was wasting my time talking about something that I could not control when I needed to be in business mode. I am sure if we access our lives we will find ourselves doing it more often that we realize. Now imagine spending that time doing something productive in our lives. Just imagine.… (plus d'informations)
