On graduating in history from Selwyn College, Cambridge, Robert L. Jarman went on to spend the next 25 years in the Arab world. He lived first in Saudi Arabia in the late 1960s, before moving on to other states of the Arbian Peninsula. His Arabian career ended in Aden in 1994 when, on the outbreak afficher plus of the Yemen civil war, he was evacuated with others to Djibouti by the French navy. In the late 1980s he was Consultant on Archives to the new Bahrain National Museum, and in Saudi Arabia he carried out research for Saudi Aramco's Research Department. At the time of the Kuwait Crisis in 1990-1 he was living in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, and was in Kuwait on the day the Amir, H.H.
