I was not up for James’s grim, experimental writing. This is not, as the Guardian reviewer suggested, anything like Kate Atkinson’s work. There are suggestions of classical Greek tragedy here: it is the adult daughter’s fate to murder her mother. The act has been predetermined and has nothing to do with the daughter’s free will. There’s also a kind of Greek chorus of ghostly maternal ancestors. As far as I got, I found the novel really stagey, contrived, and not at all interesting or enjoyable.
