The chemical processing of photographic emulsions became a quest for industrial scientists, film companies such as Kodak and Agfa-Gavaert, and dedicated artists and craftsmen through the 20th century and probably peaking at the height of the mid-century amateur boom 1940-80. Informed by books like this one, the craft of photography could engender amateur science in the most dedicated practitioners or ritualistic sequences in the darkroom. That craft rapidly disappeared in the first decade of the 21st century as digital cameras took over, and in the second decade of the century even the digital methods are quickly eroding as AI takes over.
