Bettina Hurrelmann (1943–2015)

Bettina Hurrelmann was born in Dzierżoniów, Poland, then Reichenbach, Lower Silesia, Germany. After earning a teaching degree she worked for three years as a teacher, before studying German, education and philosophy at the University of Münster. There she obtained a doctorate in 1974. In 1983, she became a professor of Literature and literature didactics at the University of Essen; in 1984, a professor at the University of Tilburg (Netherlands); then in 1988 a professor at the University of Cologne. She headed the Center for Reading Research and Children's and Youth Media in Cologne until 2008.
She was co-editor of the magazine Praxis Deutsch.
