This massive work, a masterpiece of 19th century Anglo-Saxon scholarship (I'll explain what I mean by that later), consists of eight volumes bound as nine, as follows --

Volume II, The Hunnish and Vandal Invasions
Volume III: The Ostrogothic Invasion
Volume IV: The Imperial Restoration
Volume V: The Lombard Invasion
Volume VI: The Lombard Kingdom
Volume VII: The Frankish Invasion
Volume VIII: The Frankish Empire

Before continuing, I should say that I have only read the last two volumes carefully.
