The late 1960s saw the start of a brief period of legislative relaxation regarding erotic publications, with several publishers issuing daring descriptions of less usual erotic and fetishistic practices. These paperbacks tended to be issued with very similar yellow covers. 'Torture Erotica' by Edwin Henri appeared under the Diamond Star imprint, and it is an example of te more extreme end of the previously banned spectrum. It is a compendium of information, much of it of questionable veracity, and presumably by design it is shocking – to a nauseating extent – except perhaps from those unfortunates who find their arousal stronger than their nausea. By today's standards it is also shockingly out-of-tune with 'political correctness', particularly in its sexism and racism, but to my mind this makes the book more amusing, as an indication of forty years of moral progress, than truly reprehensible.
