This is a tramway book that is different. It started as a university thesis and has been elaborated and improved to form the present volume. The development of the tramway is illustrated by detailled references to system of various sizes such as Ingolstadt, Idar-Oberstein, Oldenburg, Bamberg, regensburg, Ulm, Würzburg, Heidelberg, bielefeld, Krefeld, Hannover, München. Many of these are little documented, but the bias towards South Germany provides us with a lot of new material. München is tackled in very great detail, but as the author lives there, he can hardly be blamed for concentrating on his home system. The really useful feature of the book is the massive set of tables which are packed with useful data. Coloured maps and diagrams improved clarity greatly, andd it is obvious that the author has published this book as a labour of love rather than as a source of income. (...) There are many abbreviations (all listed nicely to make things quite clear) but these could be a stumbling block to the reader unfamiliar with German.
