Critiques

An excellent account of the day to day experience of the 1948 war -- especially how soldiers on both sides understood their own participation in violence and how state propaganda shaped their actions. If Hazkani's work has a flaw, it is that the sources don't allow him to assess the situation in the state militaries on the Arab side -- while I was hoping to gain a truly panoramic view of the situation, the only sources available to Hazkani from the Arab side of the war are intercepted letters from the Arab Liberation Army (ALA), a relatively small part of the broader Arab war effort in Palestine. Still, an excellent book which breaks many long-standing myths about 1948.
