Yes, I get into a different mode when I read fiction first published over a century ago, as in the case of this Christian novelette. My main interest during the reading involved the dynamics of the business of art and literature in the characters' lives. I rather liked Mr. Hamilton's character in particular, except…
This isn't the only story I've read from way back where what passes for romance in it doesn't work for me at all. What's with the gallant heroes (especially heroes of faith) who fall and remain desperately in love with haughty women who don't care for them? I'm always like, "Why are you still so into her?" And what kind of man wants to be with a woman if the only way he can have her is if life breaks her spirit and she might finally decide that maybe that man who's stuck on her is better than nothing?
I find nothing romantic or pleasing about that.
Nevertheless, for the most part, I enjoyed this quick story's old-fashioned style for what it is.
