- Courte biographie
- Poet and producer of hymnals. Also fifth generation preacher and second generation Adventist preacher, originally Methodist. Writer of popular tracts: Future Punishment; Intermediate State; Destiny of the Wicked, etc. Major work: Pauline Theology, or, The Christian Doctrine of Future Punishment. In 1860 elected President of the Christian Publication Society and the Christian Association. His motto: "No creed but the Bible, no master but Christ, no name but Christian." Resigned the position when the name Advent Christian was adopted. In 1865 established the Scriptural Tract Repository, Boston and published a monthly, The Christian, with ultimately a circulation of 35,000.
