nspector Field shows his friend, Charles Dickens, the body of a young woman dragged from the river. Dickens knew the young housemaid. He and his friend, Wilkie Collins, team up to find the murderer.

In real life, Dickens was a friend & mentor to fellow author, Wilkie Collins who eventually wrote the first or one of the first mysteries. In the book, most people know recognize Dickens but Collins is not yet well known.

The year of 1509 had brought a golden autumn to the west of Ireland. When Mara attends the funeral of a local priest, the last thing she expects is a corpse to be discovered lying on the church steps - a man stung to death.

Another installment in Cora Harrison's cosy murder mystery series set in 1920s Cork, where the Reverend Mother Aquinas figures out whodunnit while educating the children of the economically struggling city. This installment deals with a murder in broad daylight in the English Market. It's obvious who pulled the trigger that kills a corrupt city politician—or is it?

For me, this series falls into the same category as the Cadfael mysteries. Are the books great literature? No. Are they a bit of escapism written with a great deal of evident affection for the time and place in which they're set? Yes. It all builds to an enjoyably predictable denouement, even if you've got to handwave one or two elements of it.

I do with Harrison had an editor who'd steer her towards better book titles, though.

I love these mysteries, set in the 17th century before the English have overrun the country destroying much of the native culture. I love Mara the 'Lady Judge' and her School of Brehon law where she instructs aspiring lawyers of Brehon law and for the setting, The Burren in County Clare, both utterly irresistible for me. This time, two men from Aran turn up claiming the younger to be the son of a local taoiseach (chieftain) and thus the heir as the man, as yet, has no heir.
Mara has to figure it out. And, as ever, in a hurry! The stories are solidly constructed, a little podgy here and there, but I love many of the characters-- the students, and all the various people in her community. Mara, in order to make the plots work, has to do some bone-headed things, but that's ok with me because I am so content with the rest! ****… (plus d'informations)
