- Alma Ward Hamrick was born in Pearl, Texas. She attended college in Denton, earning a teaching certificate in about 1916. In 191, she married James l. Hamrick, with whom she had two daughters. She taught school in Eastland, McCulloch and San Saba counties for 15 years. She contributed articles to newspapers and international publications for many years. She was deeply involved in local history and civic matters and was instrumental in saving San Saba’s historic mill. She served as chair of the county’s centennial committee in 1956 and researched 19 state historical markers. Her book The Call of The San Saba: A History of San Saba County (1940) remains a seminal work in local history.
