A decent enough explanation of some of the things that makes Texas successful as opposed to, say, California (i.e., making money, making jobs, increased immigration). The author is not a conservative, but she is fair-handed and even-minded (i.e., not a loony liberal, just probably a decent Texas-y liberal, though she does live in the People's Republic of Austin). Worth the read for Texans and non-Texans alike.

As a non-Texan, I had recently visited the Statehouse in Austin, and was reminded how infrequently the Texas legislatures meet. I thought that was strange at the time, and wondered how that came to pass. Erica Grieder's book explained a lot about the size and attitude of the Texas government, and the reasons behind it. I felt she did a good job explaining both the very good points of Texas (job growth, low taxes, etc.), and some of the less favorable sides of Texas (low wages, high numbers of medically uninsured).
