Louis Moreau Gottschalk (New Orleans, May 8, 1829 – Rio de Janeiro, December 18, 1869) was an American composer and pianist, best known as a virtuoso performer of his own romantic piano works. He spent most of his working career outside of the United States.

Critiques

Louis Moreau Gottschalk was probably the first American piano composer and virtuoso. Born in 1829 and raised in New Orleans, he trained in France and then returned to this country, where he toured indefatigably. He spent his last 4 years in South America, giving "monster concerts" which featured thousands of performers. He died much too young at age 40 in Rio de Janeiro and was buried in Brooklyn's famous Green-Wood Cemetery. This book represents his diary during his touring years and provides a fascinating look at his musical performances, the people he met along the way, and what life was like in the 1850s and 1860s. My only quibble about the book is the frequent use of French without translation.… (plus d'informations)
