What Awaits? by Ernie Gammage is a solid collection of short stories that are quite entertaining. The first story, Like Water, truly pulls you in as a reader and shows the author's creativity with a murder-for-hire plot gone wrong. This story sets the stage for more fun as you explore the depths of the human plight. From solving a water shortage in a unique way to vampires and more, there is plenty here to grab your attention. It's great to have a collection of stories to pick up from time to time and have a short read. This collection fits the bill and proves to be immensely compelling. Recommend.… (plus d'informations)

What Awaits? by Ernie Gammage is a collection of short stories that will leave you bewildered and intrigued. Each story has a twist, an understood assumption, or at times the author lets you fill in the ending with your own imagination. I liked many of the stories, but my favorite would be Great Things. The story played out in my head like a movie. The ending was a pleasant twist. I am unsure if this is Gammage's first book, but in my mind, his signature writing is textured characters that spin together an addicting reading encounter. He keeps you guessing how and when the change of direction will come.… (plus d'informations)

This was a quick read of short stories / essays about life and death. Some of the stories were fantastical, while others were just okay. I was surprised by some of the stories, including the graphic violence in some.
I was disappointed in the story about the Covid vaccine, as it will invariably stir up people with its generic and misinformed storyline.
Other stories were interesting, some were futuristic, some down to earth. All the stories had some sort of imaginary element to them in my opinion, imagining their life to be something - even if they were actually living it.
Quirky and original.

Texas author Ernie Gammage is a multitalented artist – a musician and composer, having been awarded the Texas Songwriters Association Texas Music Legends Hal Of Fame, a visual artist with exhibitions of his paintings throughout Texas, and now an author of speculative fiction. His debut written publication – WHAT AWAITS? – the cover painting of which is Ernie’s art.

Ernie’s ability to create visual images in his short stories is likely influenced by his paintings and prints: begin with a few primary colors, alter their intersections, allow interplay, and the result is a unique surprise. In his sixteen short stories, each story in the range of ten pages in length, characters are created who face enigmas or arduous decisions that adhere to the titular question of the book’s title. The overview of the content has been well stated – ‘Relationships are tough. Present or future, crazed or loving, they’re tough. Full of the “what ifs” that define speculative short fiction, some stories are an easy read, heartwarming even; others…not so much. In some there’s peace, love, and epiphany, in others revenge, horror, and death. From Mexico to Titan, Memphis to the foothills of the Himalayas, the unpredictable and the unexpected await in this exploration of the predicament that is the human condition.’

Reading these stories is similar to attending a well-primed buffet: each story introduces an immediately well focused character whose prelude to decisions and surprise resolutions presents an at times horrifying and other at other times hilarious exploration of what it means to be human.

As Ernie has stated, ‘Seems I’ve always led two lives...at the same time…Whether it’s’ art, music or writing, it all comes from and goes to the same place. Story telling is the same no matter what the medium.’ With this new scriptive venture, Ernie quite successfully enters the literary arena. Highly recommended.
