Liz Roman Gallese was a reporter for the Wall Street Journal in the 1970s. She encountered serious hurdles with her career because, like most women of that era, she put her husband and family ahead of her own success. She was intrigued to explore how other educated women with corporate jobs faired so she started to research - thus she wrote this book.

In 1975 women only made up 10% of the graduating class of Harvard Business School, as compared to 46% today. Liz Gallese chose six women from that class and followed their careers and personal lives for 10 years documenting their achievements, shortcomings, emotional issues, and overall success in reaching their goals.

Being part of the elite selected group of women to participate in what was normally considered a “man’s arena”, earning a Harvard Business degree did not guarantee success. Aside from all the domestic issues - most prominently - the willingness to relocate, there were other obstacles: the lack of courage and self confidence, the limited vision of success, the lack of common sense, the inability to be objective and not take things personal, and lack of commitment.

The documentary includes stories of childhood and what led them to Harvard in the first place. They talk about their college years, husbands and children, and a complete detailed description of the ups and downs of their careers. It is quite interesting to compare their individual experiences, especially juxtaposed to the issues women have in today’s work environment trying to balance their personal lives with a meaningful career.
