- Caroline Fox was a member of the influential Fox family of Falmouth, England. In keeping with Quaker tradition, she began keeping a daily diary in 1835. She recorded her impressions and memories of many scientists, artists, writers, and intellectuals she came to know, including John Stuart Mill, Thomas and Jane Welsh Carlyle, and John Sterling. She often summarized their lectures and conversations at great length. With her sister Anna Maria, she translated several English religious works into Italian. She never married and lived at home her whole life. Following the death of their brother Barclay Fox, also a diarist, she and Anna Maria raised their four nephews. Selections from Caroline's diary and correspondence were first published under the title Memories of Old Friends: Journals and Letters of Caroline Fox of Penjerrick, Cornwall (1881-1882).
