Received as a member giveaway this book has been sat waiting patiently for its turn to be read. Once I did finally find time to pick it up I was totally captivated and could barely tear myself away from the pages. The premise is simple and the writing is clear and enchanting. This is a good read for anyone who appreciates a bit of suspense and excitement in their lives.

Fire Season is one of those books you simply cannot put down. With a story that not only makes you feel as though you are there, but also makes you sympathize with the characters involved.

A well written suspense set in New Zealand, V H Folland has created a unique story which leaves you hanging onto every word and wondering what will happen next.

Was so good I have passed it onto my Dad to read next!

Fire Season by V.H. Folland is a great read for those who like suspense and maybe even a little learning. This story takes place in Brooke's Vale and tells us about a depressed man and what he and his flying club must do to save their remote home and the survivors that they can from out of control wildfires that are Hell bent on destroying everything in the way.

If you ever wondered what it is like to be the pilot who is trying to put out all the wildfires that all the dry hot "fire seasons" bring and then having to choose between your home and those you care about or the lives and homes of others you volunteered and promised to protect then I would give this book a read. It has such technical detail and imagery it seems like you are apart of it all too.

My Rating: ★★★★☆

The Docks is a short crime novella about Harry, a recently released convict who is struggling to stay on the straight and narrow. When Harry agrees to a small act of arson, he quickly learns there’s more to the plan than he was told. When he takes drastic measures to rescue innocent lives, taking one not-so-innocent life in the process, he finds himself neck deep in trouble. He has to confess to burglary and acting in self-defense but is trying to avoid murder and terrorism charges. Harry quickly must learn who is on his side and who might still be out to get him before he finds himself behind bars once again.

I really enjoyed this quick read. Despite his sordid past, Harry is a truly likable character. He obviously has some heart, saving the ship’s crew like he did and putting himself at risk of returning to prison. So he has to skirt the truth a bit to maintain his freedom and start rebuilding his good name—can you really blame him?

Folland’s writing style is easy to follow, and I completely felt I was part of the action throughout the whole story. You know I’ve said it before, this sort of crime drama is not really my thing, but I’m finding I enjoy it just fine every now and then, especially when it is written as well as this. For such a short book, it is really fleshed out like a full novel, which obviously takes some writing skill!

I definitely recommend The Docks for a fast, entertaining read! How else can you get a glimpse into a life of crime without ever having to pay a lawyer or wear an orange jumpsuit?
