Coming from Australia, I'd long heard about this "Lancashire League" that many Australian cricketers would spend their southern winter playing. So "See the Conquering Hero" helpfully filled a gap that had been noticeable in my cricketing knowledge.

Starting from the launch of the Lancashire League in 1892 through its glory days in the early to mid-20th Century and onwards, Edmundson gives a good rundown of the League's highs and lows and the stars that played in it over the years. However, Edmundson has an unusual writing style and seems to have an odd relationship with punctuation, which can be offputting.
