Bieke Depoorter

Magnum photographer Bieke Depoorter has traveled to Egypt regularly since the beginning of the revolution in 2011, making intimate pictures of Egyptian families in their homes. In 2017, she revisited the country with the first draft of this book, inviting others to write comments directly onto the photographs. Contrasting views on country, religion, society, and photography arise between people who would otherwise never cross paths. The included booklet features all of the handwritten notes in the original Arabic as well as the English translations. In October 2017 Depoorter met Agata in a strip club in Paris. Over the next three years, the women dove deep into a collaboration, creating a small alternative universe that served as a container for them to explore questions they each had regarding identity, performance, and representation: Who is the true author of these images? Who is the true subject? Who is Agata? Who is Agata when being photographed? Who is Bieke? Who is Bieke when making photographs? Why make these pictures? What are the motives and motivations? Who is responsible for what?

The book tells both the story of a young woman using a photographer to find some sense of identity, and the story of a photographer using a young woman to better understand photographic authorship and herself. These intertwined narratives are threaded via a combination of images, letters, and notes, but what defines the dialogue is the ever-present reflex of self-awareness and self-reflection. The result is a project that never lands on any sort of conclusive truth, instead highlighting the slippery nature of truth in situations where power, responsibility, and control are in a constant state of flux.

As a whole, Agata is a project that asks more questions than it offers answers, first recognizing the well-worn idea of photographer-as-witness as a relative impossibility, then throwing all players involved under the microscope: photographer, subject, audience, and, of course, the medium itself.



Design - the object

This book’s design is, like the dynamic it examines, complex and constantly shifting. Its contents are laid out chronologically, and the book is Japanese bound, with perforations on the fold. This leaves the reader with the choice of whether to tear open the pages and see a hidden story; alternative narratives, versions of truth that do not fit squarely with the truth the photographer originally presents.

Once a reader decides to open a sealed page, there is no undoing that choice. To some degree, this implicates the reader, involving them in how the multifaceted story is represented. Ces dernières années, Bieke Depoorter a promené son regard candide à travers la Russie et les Etats-Unis. Le hasard des rencontres déterminait son mode d'hébergement. La chaleur de l'accueil et l'intimité qu'elle a pu partager avec ses hôtes ont donné naissance à des photos intrigantes.
Pour sa première série intitulée Ou Menya, Bieke Depoorter a voyagé pendant trois mois à travers la Russie. Ne parlant pas le russe, elle s'est débrouillée avec un petit papier sur lequel était inscrit un texte traduit en russe : « Je cherche un endroit pour passer la nuit. Connaissez-vous des gens qui peuvent me proposer un lit ou un canapé ? Je n'ai besoin de rien de particulier et j'ai mon propre sac de couchage. Je ne souhaite pas séjourner à l'hôtel car j'ai peu d'argent et parce que je veux voir comment vivent les gens en Russie. Je pourrais peut-être dormir chez vous ? Merci beaucoup pour votre aide ! ».
La petite note n'a pas raté son objectif. La jeune photographe a pu trouver un toit pour chaque nuit. Curieuse, elle a pu découvrir de l'intérieur des mondes inconnus, souvent merveilleux. Elle ne savait jamais où elle allait atterrir la nuit suivante. On lui a raconté des histoires sans queue ni tête. La musique et les chants, autour d'excellents repas bien arrosés à la vodka, ou une promenade nocturne bras dessus bras dessous avant d'aller au lit faisaient partie de son quotidien. Bieke n'a pris des photos que lors de moments intenses, lorsqu'elle sentait une grande implication. Ce sont des photos qui ne vous donnent pas seulement à voir, mais à vivre. Des photos qui vous rendent complice des impressions profondes de quelqu'un qui s'est introduit d'abord en tant qu'être humain dans l'intimité des différents endroits.
Bieke Depoorter a mené la même expérience à travers les Etats-Unis. Elle a baptisé sa série I am about to call it a Day. Elle s'est également laissée surprendre à chaque occasion lors de ce work in progress. Elle ne savait jamais où son prochain interlocuteur allait l'amener. Ses clichés ont l'apparence de moments fugaces, presque volés, issus de la vie des autres. Ils sont directs mais toujours respectueux. Ils constituent un poème visuel qui emporte le spectateur dans le regard affectueux de leur auteur.… (plus d'informations)
