Roger Crosnier (1906–1981)

This is the only work I have encountered that deals solely with the function of officiating at fencing tournaments. Written on the eve of foil's conversion from dry (steam or standard) to electric it captures decades of experience in the judging of bouts and service as president of jury in competitions. For modern referees the technical guidance is hopelessly out of date; however, the sense of the role and philosophy of officiating is still valid and makes this a worthwhile read. Of course, for classical and modern dry fencers, much of this volume remains very valuable.
