This collection contains 78 stories by football writers from the Fairfax newspapers, especially the Melbourne Age and Sunday Age. Writers include Caroline Wilson, Martin Flanagan, Rohan Connolly, Greg Baum, Martin Blake, Jake Niall, Samantha Lane, and several others from the Fairfax stable of football writers. Includes an introduction by Dennis Cometti. All contributions include their original publication details.
Cometti is one of Australia’s most popular and respected sports commentators. He has been calling major league football on radio and television since the 1970s. He also played and coached at senior level in the WAFL football competition. This autobiographical work covers his career as participant and commentator. There is a balance in the writing about Cometti’s views and recollections on broadcasting, and on sports issues, incidents and personalities, with particular emphasis on football. Cometti concludes the book by selecting his best he has seen cricket and football teams. He selects his best world, best Australian, and best Western Australian cricket teams; and his best all states, and Western Australian football teams. He also provides very brief observations about many of the commentators and special comments commentators he has worked with over his career.
