The author has been a bold and effective evangelist since his conversion to Christianity in his college days. So when Gary Comer says the church needs to change the way we do evangelism, it’s not because he is timid. It’s because it’s not working. “Soul Whisperer” offers a fresh way to connect people with the life Jesus offers. If only it were four simple principles! Instead, Comer walks the reader first through introspection in order to mine personal experience, hardships and brokenness. A deeply personal book, Comer discloses his own triumphs and failures as he demonstrates the ways flawed people can direct lost people to a Jesus who is ready to enter, help and heal. (One exercise is to reflect on one’s own past for pain and failure. As I did this and came upon a particularly painful event, I had to chuckle at myself for thinking, ‘Oh, that was awful. I could really use that!’ thus watching Romans 8:28 come to life in that moment.) The first half of the book motivates the reader to “want to.” The second half of the book shows the reader “how to.” A particularly helpful section gives insight on reaching people from other faith traditions and no-faith traditions such as skeptics, agnostics and atheists. This book is paradigm-shifting for individuals, and is also recommended for small groups use and training.
