This quiet little book carries a powerful message. Luna loves Library Day not only because she loves books, but because that is the day she can see her Dad. It takes a few pages to realize that her parents no longer live together, and the story she and her father share mirrors her own world. The Princess has parents who do not agree, but she knows that her Troll Father loves her very much. The image of Luna with her father after reading this mini book will bring tears to your eyes.
This is currently my favorite picture book.
--The illustrations are delightful.
--Luna has a fully imagined personality.
--Her parents are both present, and it's implied that they are co-parenting, but that's not obvious (there's no "you'll be fine if your parents split up" overt messaging here, the author/illustrator just shows it!)
--The family is multi-racial. (again, no over messaging, just showing.)
--Plus, my personal catnip: A book within a book. SO. GREAT.
