In the inaugural installment of the Valkaria Mysteries, we meet Harvest, a new agent at The Bureau, the police for paranormals. Harvest, a witch gifted with second sight, wants to find her missing sister. Assisted by her vampire supervisor, Quinn, and his team of supernaturals, along with some other friends—Harvest delves into the investigation and discovers a murder.

The novel goes into slightly darker territory than I expected, yet it maintains a quick pace and kept me involved in the mystery. A couple of scenes feel contrived, one in particular stands out: the bar encounter where investigators discover that the villains consistently pay in cash—except for a conveniently timed exception from a week prior, making the receipt readily available. These sorts of scenes are not uncommon in procedural thrillers, but this one caught my attention.

The characters are well-developed, and I found the supporting cast—especially Wild and Angel—particularly compelling. The intricate world-building and detailed setting enhance the overall experience.

This sets the stage for further exploration in the series, leaving some tantalizing threads to follow. I anticipate reading the next installment when it is released.

Special thanks to the author and Book Sirens for providing the eARC.
