David Callinan hits another one out of the park! The Monk is back with more nonstop action and I liked this second installment of the Mike Delaney series even more than the first. Mike returns to his Irish roots to help Sister Beatrice find the twin sister she was separated from at birth. Of course trouble finds Mike Delaney wherever he goes and a little romance finds him this time too. The book is filled with great characters, good and evil, including Oswald Dante, one of the more colorful bad guys I have seen in a long time. Mike gets out of trouble that seems insurmountable and left me wondering if he is part superhero. There are a lot of coincidences that to some may seem implausible but they added to the suspense and kept me reading into the wee hours. Look out Jack Reacher. Here comes Mike Delaney! This would make a great TV movie. Many thanks to the author for allowing me the chance to read this a few days early. I can't wait for the next installment.… (plus d'informations)

As a short story, One False Move introduces intriguing characters, reveals hints of backstory and motivation, and sets up some nicely contrasting situations where the characters interact. Protagonist Delaney is “a trained assassin and veteran of ... bruising fighting contests in the South-East Asia games,” but he has vowed to kill no more. In this, he resembles other fictional, well-skilled but personally-private characters who save others while hiding their pain. And in this story Delaney's closest friend is a friend in need.

Graphic, well-staged violence drives the story, but there’s enough depth of character to keep it interesting, and enough well-hinted backstory to make readers want to know more. Dialog is quick and informative, and the protagonist’s skills are nicely displayed, ready for more and longer books in the series.

The second half of this ebook offers a lengthy look ahead to what’s to come, but the first half is a good fast short story and a fun read.

Disclosure: I found a copy and wanted a short read. I offer my honest review.

Mike Delaney was a hard, take no prisoners type of guy – until his wife was murdered and their baby died with her. He had been nearly murdered in China while working as a cop; worked before that for a group that didn’t have a name and survived but Maria’s murder? That did him in. He left their house for a monastery high in the California hills, where he meditated, practiced Tai Chi and other arts until time came he had to do something else. Find the murderer of his wife.
She had been a journalist with a home office he didn’t intrude on but, after the fire he had sense enough to move what was left of her computer and files somewhere else until the investigation was done. Until the public’s mind was distracted by the next big thing – The Priest. He took lovely young women, made them confess on tape to a myriad of sins and then put the tape in their mouths and killed them. His newest offerings had a cross cut into their backs.
All clues and other disappearances somehow lead to a charity funder called LifeForce International but how? Mike risks everything to find out and, at the end, the surprise is his. You have to read this thriller! It never stops surprising and making you think you’ve got the answer when, in fact, you’ve got no clue at all!
