Great guide and visuals to Earth's fascinating creatures. Doesn't chronicle every single specimen ever known- but this encyclopedia can serve as good reference material- be it a quick lookup or to study. The physical book could easily double as a ship's anchor because it so massive and heavy.

Full-color photos. Each spread is composed of full-color photos, sketches, and explanatory text covering the anatomy, behavior, and adaptations of birds and presented in a visually appealing manner that compels further page turning.

This story shows the differences between the animals, and showcases pictures to show you what every animal looks like and which category they fit in.

I could sit and look through this book for hours. It is incredible and would be great for in a classroom.

This is a great introduction to all aspects of birds for the beginner interested in birds. Although it's created for juveniles, the information is detailed and was mostly new to me.

I read all of it, but it is more set up for browsing for whatever is most fascinating to you.

I really like this book because of the variety of pictures of different kinds of animals. It really teaches kids what kinds of animals are out in the world so that they're aware of those outside of what they are used to seeing. It includes labels as well, which is always helpful for young readers, and readers in general. The purpose is to inform children about different kinds of animals.

Skimming through this book its impossible to not notice how striking and vibrant the photographs are. Each major subtopic has a beautiful two-page spread depicting animal and plant life, statistics, maps, schematics, and cross-sections. The size of the text suggests that the target audience is probably grades 3-6. I could easily imagine children picking up this book, being captivated by it, and read at least several sections if not the whole book. The forward from Tony Juniper, executive director of Friends of the Earth, is very moving and he describes the implications of our impact on earth and our responsibility to preserve it. The glossary and index is very user friendly and navigable.½

Tree-From Seed To Mighty Forest is an interesting, Informative book for children from grades 3-6 to look through and read. This story informs the reader about different types of trees and their roots with other living organisms that may grow on a tree. There are different facts about height, width, and strength of these trees. Each tree has a purpose and reason for existing. This is not only informative about tress in the United States but in different countries as well. So it integrates geography as well!

This book is helpful because it teaches students about the many different kinds of mammals. It includes the differences between marsupials (mammals that raise their young in a pouch) and placentals (mammals that raise young inside mother’s body). It includes vivid close up photographs and is broken up into different topics such as how mammals defend themselves and how they stay together.

David Burnie has authored over a hundred books in the Biological Sciences. His e guides Insect book is a hodgepodge of topics related to insects. There are articles on specific insect groups, more broad groups of insects (scavengers, true bugs, parasites, blood feeders, pollinators), and a number of topics which explore insect's connections with daily life. It is packed with information, but most of the space is reserved for large and clear photos. However, no space is wasted. Nearly all photos have text associated with them, clearly describing what is going on in the pictures or drawings.

What makes e guides different is its connection with the world wide web. At the accompanying website, http://www.insect.dke-guides.com, the reader can use keywords within the book to further explore topics covered in the book. The results of the keyword search connects the content in the book to diagrams, pictures, and videos on the website. This will give alternate presentations of the material, creating options to absorb the information. While I have not explored the website fully, the time I did spend there was hassle free and marginally enlightening. Combining the book with the website allows updating and extending material easier. If only the bloodsuckers that make textbooks would borrow this idea, I might pay off my student loans before I'm ninety.
