I was pleased to find this relatively obscure but rich book on Project Gutenberg. Buckrose tells the story of the seaside village of Thorhaven through the stories of several main characters. Miss Ethel, an older woman, is having difficulty coming to terms with the changes in her town, from new homes being built to the trend of young people leaving service jobs in the village to find work in the city. Caroline, one of these young people, struggles between her servant class background and her desire for something more, both in work and in love.

There is nothing particularly unique about this book, but it is fascinating to see how bigger issues of class and gender roles come through this tale of everyday life in a seaside town.½
