In 1852 Concord Massachusetts Doctor Josiah Bartlett is called out to the potential suicide of Mary Chase. Later he has his suspicions and starts to investigate the shadowy figure that he sees as Mary's character, slowly discovering the person she was and who killed her.
This is a story that slowly unravels, and drew me in, with some good descriptions of the characters with a good tale.

Time has moved on and it is now November 1860 when Dr Bartlett has a visitor - she says that she is Edie Chase and she needs the Doctor's help. Now the Doctor starts to believe that her murdering father is still alive and so the hunt is on.
It would probably be better to have read the first two books to give a complete background to this book. I did at first find the POV switching between characters sometimes confusing - a helpful hint of who was speaking would have been useful.
I enjoyed the story, really like the characters and the writing style drew me into the tale. Will there be a fourth?

1862 and the Civil War is in progress. But a smaller war is occurring between Timothy Bartlett also know as Chase, Yankee, and former colleague in the Dead Rabbits, Jack Lennon, Southern. The two have history involving Timothy's dead sister. If they were to meet would either survive.
An interesting story set against the backdrop of the American Civil War
