The author harbors the view that gardening has played a major role in the rise of civilizations. [1] I have yet to find a City, or even a building, conducive to a "gardening" civilization. Aside from a few experts, and the revenant spirits from an ancient Eden, few folks have found the link between gardens and social development. Bienz' work will help. Begins with a chapter on the historical relationship between people and plants, with taxa and classification details on the latter. The focus is on identification and use. For example, provides pictures and the labels needed in the comparative morphology of plant parts we use to group them. The Brassicas are highlighted. Noting that "51% of American families now grow some type of vegetable garden" [13].
