This book covers the psychological and spiritual aspects of Vodou rather than the ritual aspects that are emphasized in most works on the subject. The author studies for many years with Aunt Tansia, a leader given to cryptic statements and injunctions. Like other anthropologists in similar quests Beaubrun is frequently told that her intellect is getting in the way of her understanding. I am left with the question of why it is worth writing a book about something that really cannot be conveyed in words.
