Eric Lewin Altschuler

Eric Altschuler wrote his thesis at Harvard on applying statistical analysis to the fugues in Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier. Stephen Jay Gould, the popular science writer, served on his supervisory committee and wrote the introduction to this book. Altschuler writes in an accessible, lively style, giving useful background and structural information on each fugue, with good explanations of musical terms like stretto, canon, subject and countersubject, sequence, inversion and more.
