The Red Cedar of Afognak: a Driftwood Journey
by Alisha S. Drabek and Karen R. Adams. Illustrated by Gloria N. Selby. Native Village of Afognak, 2004.
28 pp.

The Red Cedar of Afognak is a Informational picture book about a an Apaa (grandfather) and His two Grandchildren (Michael and James. He tells a story about a red cedar tree and connects with their past lives and their ancestors past lives living on the island. He used knowledge passed down to him to make deep connections with the boys and their ever-wondering questions about nature . About how the red cedar tree came to be where it was because no red cedars grow on or near Afognak or Kodiak Island. Appa uses the Tree as a metaphor about how they and their ancestor survive even after all the disasters that have happed to them, they still live on. The illustrations look to be done in water color. This book is moving and it seems to have a good rhythm to it keeps you wondering what else Apaa is going to say. I enjoyed this it is nice to hear different interpretations on survival in Alaska.
