The interesting premise is that of a secret society of women acting as powers behind the throne, managing the dynasty of the ruling classes and trained (unspecified how they manage to fit this in around being princess etc) in many arts. they have strict obedience to their Mother. A neglected daughter is chosen to become bride of distant Prince. She knows nothing of the land or it's culture merely that his bloodline must succeed. It turns out he's a bit of an oaf, but his younger brother is more charming.
Somewhere else in a neighbouring but separated land a Prince is trying to become emperor by uniting the tribes. He's also guided a by different secret society of women, and has a ridiculously mixed heritage apparently granting a wide variety of powers including what initially seems to be limited shapeshifting, but no and then appears to be able to take any form. Sometimes clothes are an issue, and sometimes they're taken for granted. The Prince starts out trying to kill the ruling family of this neighbouring land, to prevent them ascending to the throne granting an unspecified magic power. He can apparently cross the divide without trouble but the rest of his nation can't.
The girl finds herself the centre of attention and spends a lot of time whining about it.
Could have been a lot shorted and more focused and would have been better for it.½

I will say that every four or five chapters, there was an editing error that did pull me out of the story, but I was able to figure out the either missing word or typo'd name and get back into it.
This book would be rated for mature audiences as there are graphic depictions of intimate scenes and death. Overall, I found the story engaging and will gladly read the next book in the series. 4/5 stars.
