During last years, I've been working in ecommerce projects with product information management systems as a part of the infrastructure.

I've been learning about product information management from vendor articles, blog posts, own project tasks. However, I still had a feeling that I don't have a full picture of the PIM discipline and need to feel gaps with something fundamental and generic.

The book from Jorij Abraham 'Product Information Management: Theory and Practice' was a thing I was looking for. It walks you through the key concepts and features to the concrete algorithms on how to select and implement a PIM system.

The book covers all sorts of possible processes in a PIM system: master data management, category and attribute management, workflows, publication, mass mutation, import/export and many more.

Companies that are interested in a new solution can find a ready to use scenario for selecting a PIM system.

Book appendixes are something that usually skipped by reading, but in the case of this book, the appendix that describes real implementation cases is one of the most valuable parts of the whole book. Real customer studies describe data sources of product data, approaches for categorization and product modelling, problems by an implementation, lessons learned and many more. This information helped me to rethink some of the lessons that I learned from my projects. Such an amount of real cases help to discover certain patterns that are natural for PIM projects.

The book is published 5 years ago, in 2014, but up-to-date and relevant for businesses that are interested in a PIM solution. Integrators and service providers can use this book as a guide for their employees. However, two parts of the book can get outdated sooner than others: 'Benefits of a PIM system' and the second appendix about PIM software vendors.

Who is Responsible?

For the PIM project itself the recommendation is to set up a steering committee as nearly all departments are involved some way PIM.
